After knocking Skyline out of the losers’ bracket, Glen Allen then went on to beat Varina twice to win the state championship. After beating Varina 3-1 in the first game to set up a rematch, Glen Allen turned around to beat them 6-1 for the title. It was Varina that beat Glen Allen on Saturday to force Glen Allen into the losers’ bracket. Glen Allen pitcher Kelly Rice, who had 25 strikeouts on Sunday, had 10 in the championship game. |

When North Stafford pitcher Nikki Black is in control and throwing strikes, the Wolverines are tough to beat. When their offense is hammering out runs, the Commonwealth District's defending champions are downright unbeatable. Black gave up just one hit and struck out 14 and North Stafford got home runs from Ashley Sroggin and Laura Kelley to win at Riverbend, 7-0, last night. Black, a Coast Guard Academy signee and last year's Free Lance-Star player of the year, has gotten off to a solid start again in 2008 with a still-developing repertoire of pitches. Last night, she mixed in a change-up to help keep the Bears off balance. "I've had a lot more confidence with a lot more pitches," Black said yesterday. |

Two more North Stafford softball players have made their college choice, bringing the number to four Wolverines who will continue their careers at the next level and a fifth teammate should soon join them. North Stafford's Nikki Black will pitch for the Coast Guard Academy and sec-ond baseman Rachel Sipe will play for Rowan University in New Jersey. They join catcher Courtney Crews, who has signed with Hofstra, and Lara Kelley, who was recruited to Kutztown University. |

Black's motto: Grin and air it June 21, 2007 1:41 am
The pearly whites North Stafford's Nikki Black routinely displays on the mound disguise the tricky rise ball that confounded opposing batters all season long.
Batters likely won't feel intimidated stepping to the plate against Nikki Black. Her physical build would allow North Stafford's rising senior pitcher to easily blend in with a gaggle of high school students. And the expression on her face--she's usually wearing a broad smile, even in the most pressure-packed situations--won't leave hitters quaking in their cleats. |
